A bit of history about Nike Cortez:

Nike Cortez were the first track shoes released by Nike in 1972, and is therefore thought to be a significant aspect to the success of the company.  The Nike Cortez was first designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, aiming to product a comfortable and durable running shoe for distance training and road running.

Where did the name Cortez come from? The initial name for the shoe was "Mexico" which was inspired by the 1968 Summer Olympic Games, which were held in Mexico. Once the Olympic Games were over, the shoe was going to have another name change, this time they wanted something more catchy.

They decided on the name "Aztec", but Adidas then threatened legal action because it was too similar to their own "Azteca Gold" track shoe.  Soon thereafter they decided on the name "Cortez", which paid tribute to Hernan Cortes, the Spanish Conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire.

Bonus history fact: Just like the Cortez, Nike started off with another name and that was Blue Ribbon Sports.
